Administrative History
The Bureau of Labor Statistics was created in 1883 (Chapter 356) to gather information and prepare an annual statistical report on the state's labor force. In 1886 (Chapter 205), the commissioner was further empowered to issue subpoenas, examine witnesses under oath, and inspect businesses.
Scope and Content Note
This series contains sample forms used to gather and distribute information on the state's labor force. The forms include receipts, notices of overdue reports, and requests for information. The series also includes a brief report comparing numbers of new buildings and alterations to buildings in Buffalo and New York City for the years 1893-1895 and the bureau's 7th annual report.
Custodial History
This series was probably transferred from the New York State Library in 1978 but was not accessioned until 2000.
