Scope and Content Note
This series was collected and maintained by the state historian for use as general background material. The series consists of booklets, pamphlets, and other ephemera on topics related primarily to New York State history, local history, historic sites and buildings, historic preservation, historiography, or other subjects of interest to the state historian. Topics include archaeology, church histories, local history, school histories, historic buildings, churches and religion, museums, anniversary celebrations of events, historic markers and memorials, schools, biographic information, geographical place names, colonial history, military history, Indians, manners and customs, folklore, celebrations and pageants, and transportation.
Types of material include pamphlets, leaflets, souvenir programs, journals and articles published by historical societies, photographs (few) and other graphic works, guidebooks, scrapbooks, maps, tourism brochures, correspondence, typescripts, news clippings, postcards, biographies, and bibliographies. Items included in the series were typically created by state and local historical societies; county and municipal historians; private business companies; state, local, and federal governments; churches; and schools and universities. A few items in the series, such as local history source leaflets, were created by the Division of Archives and History.
