Scope and Content Note

This series consists of approximately 7000 index cards produced by the Division of Waterways Maintenance to facilitate access to revocable permits for the use of canal lands and waters (Series B1789). The cards present, in an abstracted form, similar information to that contained in the permits. Information transcribed on the cards includes name and address of permittee, date of permit, Dept. of Transportation region, permit number, permit costs (issuance, per year, renewal, and amendment), a brief description of the action approved by the permit, and if the permit was cancelled.

Permits issued prior to 1956 include permit book number and page number. Subseries II, "Insurance" permits contains, in addition to this information, insurance policy or certificate of insurance numbers for the land or property described by the permit. While permits covered by insurance policies date from 1930, the policies themselves date from 1961. Subseries III, "Current permits" containing identical information to the rest of the series, indexes permits which retained a longer active status and were filed at a later date by the DOT.
