Summary:
The two volumes in this series document the discharge of incarcerated individuals from Elmira Reformatory. Entries include name, consecutive number, date of discharge, and manner in which discharged. Within certain categories of discharge, other information, like the location to which the incarcerated individual was discharged or paroled, is also included. Religious affiliation is listed for those who died in the institution.

Arrangement

Volume one is arranged by category of discharge, then chronologically by date of discharge. Volume two is arranged roughly alphabetically, then chronologically by date of discharge.

Scope and Content Note

The two volumes in this series document the discharge of incarcerated individuals from Elmira Reformatory. Volume one (1909-1918) includes entries for incarcerated individuals in the following categories: paroled in custody; released on court order; discharged on court order; sentence commuted by the President of the United States; pardoned by the Governor or the President of the United States; transferred to Dannemora State Hospital; deaths; died on parole; discharged expiration of maximum; discharged expiration of minimum; escaped; attempted to escape; held in hostage; invalid paroles; maximum expires on parole; returned men re-paroled; returned voluntarily and re-paroled; special paroles; special Dannemora paroles; transferred to State prisons; released on and returned from writ; and paroled while out on writ.

All entries in volume one contain each person's name, consecutive number, and date of discharge. Within certain categories of discharge, other information, like the location to which the incarcerated individual was discharged or paroled, is also included. Religious affiliation is listed for those who died in the institution. Entries in volume two (1918-1931) include incarcerated individual's name, consecutive number, date of discharge, and manner in which discharged.

Acquisition Information

Elmira Correctional Facility transferred these volumes to the State Archives at an unknown date. The volumes were accessioned in conjunction with a project undertaken by Archives staff in 2004 to describe or integrate estrayed or unidentified records.
