Scope and Content Note

This series documents the case of Nick Donald Bagley, an escaped prisoner from Maryland. Bagley escaped from prison after serving eleven years of a fifteen year sentence for murder. Bagley was falsely found guilty of murder and fled to New York. Since his escape, he found a job and was living with family members in New York City. Bagley's case drew the attention of the New York State Legislature, several New York representatives in Congress, and New York citizens. Included with the series are the papers that were issued for Bagley's return to Maryland by Governor Rockefeller in 1973, followed by pleas to Governor Wilson to allow Bagley to remain in New York in 1974, and the final decision issued by Governor Carey in 1975 that resulted in the dismissal of the case.
