Scope and Content Note

This series consists of whole or partial archival copies of New York State's official, publicly accessible Web sites, which is maintained at the direction of the Office of the Governor. These copies document the policies and actions of the Governor and contain information that is no longer available on the current versions of the Web sites.

B1972-07: This accretion includes a copy of the New York State Web site as it existed on December 23, 2006, several days before Governor George E. Pataki (1995-2006) left office. Almost all of the content on this site was created and maintained by the Office of the Governor. This copy contains the texts of State of the State addresses, Budget Messages, and other significant speeches (1995-2006) and copies of executive orders issued in the wake of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attack on the World Trade Center; however, owing to the limitations of Web archiving technology, the press releases that were posted to the live Web site were not copied properly. It also features photographs of Governor Pataki, some of which were taken at the World Trade Center site shortly after September 11, 2001, and information about the First Family, the activities of the First Lady, the work of Lieutenant Governor Mary O. Donohue, the Executive Mansion, and past governors of New York State.

This accretion also includes a copy of a "citizen guide" Web site that was seamlessly integrated into the main New York State Web site and enabled users to locate State agency Web sites and contact information, contracting information, lobbying, grant programs, and other topics of broad interest to citizens and businesses in New York State. This guide, which was captured on December 24, 2006, consists largely of links to other State government Web sites; owing to the limitations of Web archiving technology, most of these links do not work properly.

B1972-08: This accretion contains two copies of the Office of the Governor section of the New York State Web site as it existed shortly before the resignation of Governor Eliot L. Spitzer (2007-2008) took effect; the first was produced on March 10, 2008, and the second on March 17, 2008. Both copies contain press releases, the texts of State of the State Addresses, Budget Messages, and other significant speeches (2007-2008), copies of all executive orders and proclamations that Governor Spitzer issued, photographs of Governor Spitzer, First Lady Silda Wall Spitzer, and Lieutenant Governor David A. Paterson, and information about gubernatorial appointees and screening of judicial candidates. The March 17, 2008 copy also contains Governor Spitzer's March 12, 2008 letter of resignation.

This accretion also includes copies of sections of the New York State Web site concerning the activities of First Lady Silda Wall Spitzer and Lieutenant Governor David L. Paterson (2007-2008). These sections of the site were actually part of the Office of the Governor section of the live Web site, but owing to technical problems they were copied separately on March 17, 2008; however, photographs of and press releases issued by the First Lady and the Lieutenant Governor are commingled with those of the Governor and are thus included in the archival copy of the Office of the Governor section of the site described above.

B1972-08A: This accretion consists of a copy of the New York State Web site as it existed on June 11, 2008, shortly after Governor David A. Paterson (2008-2010) took office. Almost all of the files on this site were created and maintained by the Office of the Governor, and the "Governor Paterson" link at the top right of the home page provides access to them; the other links on the home page originally went to other Web sites, and, owing to the limitations of Web archiving technology, they links do not work properly. This copy includes press releases issued by the Office of the Governor (2008) and the Office of Lieutenant Governor (2007-2008), texts of important speeches (2008), executive orders (2008), proclamations (2008), photographs of Governor Paterson (2007-2008), and biographical information about Governor Paterson and First Lady Michelle Paige Paterson.

This accretion also contains a copy of the "citizen guide" Web site that was seamlessly integrated into the main New York State Web site and facilitated access to State government agencies and programs. This copy was produced on August 18, 2008, a few months after Governor Paterson took office. It consists chiefly of links to other State government Web sites; owing to the limitations of Web archiving technology, most of these links do not work properly.

B1972-10: This accretion consists of a copy of the Office of the Governor section of the New York State Web site produced on March 5, 2010. This copy includes press releases issued by the Office of the Governor (2008-2010) and the Office of Lieutenant Governor (2007-2008), texts of State of the State Addresses, Budget Messages, and other important speeches (2008-2010), executive orders (2008-2010), proclamations (2008-2010), photographs of Governor Paterson (2007-2010), information about screening of judicial candidates, and biographical information about Governor Paterson and First Lady Michelle Paige Paterson.

B1972-10A: This accretion contains a copy of the New York State Web site, which consists almost exclusively of materials created by the Office of the Governor, produced on December 28, 2010, shortly before Governor David A. Paterson (2008-2010) left office. It includes press releases issued by the Office of the Governor (2008-2010) and the Office of Lieutenant Governor (2007-2008), texts of speeches (2008-2010), executive orders (2008-2010), proclamations (2008-2010), photographs of Governor Paterson (2007-2010), and information about screening of judicial candidates. Biographical information about Governor Paterson, First Lady Michelle Paige Paterson, and Lieutenant Governor Richard Ravitch and photographs of and press releases issued by the First Lady are also included.

This accretion also includes copies of materials that were part of the Office of the Governor section of the site but were captured separately. The "Straight Talk, Straight Answers" blog, which was captured separately for technical reasons. The "Straight Talk, Straight Answers" blog, which was captured separately on December 29, 2010 for technical reasons, features select press releases, photographs of Governor Paterson, and answers to questions submitted by citizens. A December 30, 2010 press release concerning a "Secure Communities" immigration enforcement agreement (copied December 30, 2010), a December 30, 2010 press release concerning the Governor's issuance of three pardons (copied December 31, 2010), and a December 30, 2010 press release concerning a Law Revision Commission appointment (copied December 31, 2010) were copied separately because they were published after the main New York State site was copied.

Also present are copies of four other sites maintained by the Office of the Governor. Two of the sites, Health Steps to Albany (copied December 22, 2010) and Michelle Paige Paterson's official Twitter page (copied December 31, 2010), document a children's health initiative led by the First Lady. The other sites, the main page of Governor Paterson's official Flickr photostream (copied December 24, 2010), and the main page of the Executive Chamber's YouTube channel (copied December 30, 2010) document the Office of the Governors' usage of social media, which began during the Paterson administration. Researchers should note that, owing to the structure of the live sites and the limitations of Web archiving technology, most of the content contained within the Twitter, Flickr, and YouTube pages could not be captured successfully.

This accretion also includes a December 29, 2010 copy of a "citizen guide" Web site that was seamlessly integrated into the main New York State Web site and enabled users to locate State agency Web sites and contact information, contracting information, lobbying, grant programs, and other topics of broad interest to citizens and businesses in New York State. Researchers should note that this site consists chiefly of links to other state government Web sites and that only the pages to which this site directly linked were captured successfully.
