Summary:

This series indexes maps once maintained by the Region 2 Waterways Maintenance Office of the Department of Public Works. Maps and plans indexed included the first Erie Canal enlargement, the 1895 Improvement and the Erie Barge Canal, the Black River Canal, the Chenango Canal, the Northern and Southern Reservoirs, Oneida Lake, and the Old and New Oneida Lake Canals. Also included indexed is work on the Utica State Hospital and Marcy State Hospital.

Biographical Sketch

The Department of Public Works was reformed in 1967 as the Department of Transportation (DOT). In 1992 the operation of the State's canal system was transferred from DOT to the New York State Thruway Authority, with the creation of the New York State Canal Corporation. In order to accommodate the Authority's divisional structure, the former Region 2 Waterways Maintenance office in Utica was closed and its responsibilities placed within the Thruway's Syracuse division office in Syracuse, New York.

Scope and Content Note

This series indexes a collection of maps that was once maintained by the Waterways Maintenance office of the Department of Public Works Region 2, later within the Department of Transportation. These maps related primarily to the construction and maintenance of the canal within Region 2. Included were maps and plans concerning the first enlargement of the Erie Canal, the 1895 Improvement and the Erie Barge Canal, as well as work on the Black River Canal, the Chenango Canal, the Northern and Southern Reservoirs, Oneida Lake, and the Old and New Oneida Lake Canals. Some non-canal work is also represented, such as with Utica State Hospital and Marcy State Hospital, perhaps reflecting a period when Waterways Maintenance was responsible for more than just navigable waterways. One sequence of the index originated with the Rome Barge Canal Terminal field office, emphasizing canal routes and structures for the western and northern portions of Region 2.

Most of the maps and plans that are documented by this series remain at the Canal Corporation's division office in Syracuse. Some of the 19th-century materials for no longer operationally significant structures were transferred to the New York State Archives, and are located in Series B0171, Maps, blueprints, tracings, diagrams, plans, and cross sections of Canal structures and sites.
