Administrative History

The Office of the Inspector General was created in 1983 as an independent oversight agency to monitor the operations of and identify fraud, waste, abuse, and mismanagement within the the Metropolitan Transportation Authority and its constituent agencies: New York City Transit, Long Island Rail Road, Long Island Bus, MetroNorth Rail Road, MTA Bridges and Tunnels, MTA Bus, and MTA Capital Construction Company. The Inspector General is appointed by the Governor with the advice and consent of the State Senate and is assisted by a Management Advisory Board.

It contains information about the office's mission and organizational structure, annual reports (2001-2005), abstracts of noteworthy audits and investigations (2006), and information about filing complaints and sending tips to the office.

B2140-08: This accretion consists of a copy of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority website produced on June 9, 2008, shortly after the resignation of Governor Eliot L. Spitzer (2007-2008). It contains additional annual reports (2001-2007), audit reports (2007-2008), and information about filing complaints and sending tips to the office. Researchers should note that, owing to a technical problem within the original file, audit report 2008-03 was not copied successfully.

B2140-10: This accretion consists of a copy of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority Office of the Inspector General website produced on December 17, 2010, shortly before Governor David A. Paterson (2008-2010) left office. It contains additional annual reports (2001-2010), reports of noteworthy audits of authority operations and policies and investigations (2007-2010) of employee wrongdoing, and information about filing complaints and sending tips to the office.
