Scope and Content Note

This series consists of archival copies of the publicly accessible websites of the New York State Police. Researchers should note that these sites were not copied in 2014 or 2015.

B2155-07: This accretion contains a copy of the main State Police site produced on April 11, 2007, shortly after Governor George E. Pataki (1995-2006) left office. It includes information about the division's history and mission, press releases (2000-2007), a photo gallery (2005-2006), and crime prevention and traffic safety publications for children and adults (2001-2007). Also present is information about crime prevention, employment opportunities, the entrance requirements and curriculum of the State Police Academy, firearms use and training, and counterterrorism measures. Information about the State Police community outreach unit, criminal investigation divisions, forensic science sections, and traffic safety unit is also present. Also included are lists of wanted fugitives, missing individuals, and unsolved homicides and other crimes (1996-2007).

This accretion also includes copies of two other websites maintained by the State Police as of December 2006. The AMBER (America's Missing: Broadcast Emergency Response) Alert site (copied December 27, 2006) contains information about and guidelines for issuing multistate alerts notifying the public that a child has been abducted and is believed to be in danger of serious bodily harm or death.

The TRACs (Traffic and Criminal Software) site (copied December 27, 2006) contains information about an automated traffic ticket, accident reporting, and criminal incident data collection application created by the State Police and used by state and local police agencies. Forms, user agreements, and an agenda (2006) for a steering committee meeting are also included.

B2155-08: This accretion contains a copy of the main State Police site produced on April 23, 2008 shortly after the resignation of Governor Eliot L. Spitzer (2007-2008). It includes additional press releases (2000-2008); crime prevention and traffic safety publications for children and adults (2001-2008); and lists of wanted fugitives, missing individuals, and unsolved homicides and other crimes (1996-2008).

Copies of two other State Police sites are also included. The TRACs (Traffic and Criminal Software) site (copied April 29, 2008) contains updated information about the highway safety management system used by the State Police and used by local police agencies. Forms, user agreements, and an agenda (2006) for a steering committee meeting are also included. The Recruitment Center site (captured April 29, 2008) contains information about joining the New York State Police, current job openings, the selection process, a list of regional recruitment officers, physical abilities test requirements, a study guide for the National Criminal Justice Officer Selection Inventory test (2005), and other candidate information.

Researchers should note that the AMBER Alert site was not captured in mid-2008.

B2155-10: This accretion contains a copy of the main State Police site produced on December 22, 2010, shortly before Governor David A. Paterson (2008-2010) left office. It includes additional press releases (2000-2010); crime prevention and public safety publications for adults, teenagers, and children; and lists of wanted fugitives, missing individuals, and unsolved homicides and other crimes (1949-2010).

Researchers should note that a few of the links in this copy of the site do not work properly.

This accretion also includes copies, all of which were produced on December 22, 2010, of three other State Police sites. Most of the information present in the AMBER Alert Site, the TRACs (Traffic and Criminal Software) site, and the Recruitment Center site is also included in previous copies of these sites.

B2155-20: This accretion contains a copy of the main State Police site produced on March 16, 2020, during the third term of Governor Andrew M. Cuomo (2011-2021). It contains annual reports (2015-2016); additional crime prevention and public safety publications for adults, teenagers, and children; and updated information about the role of the State Police in the enforcement of traffic safety, firearms, and criminal law. Updated information on State Police involvement in counter terrorism investigation, crime prevention and community outreach, and missing and wanted persons investigations, as well as updated information about the New York State Police Academy, the Crime Laboratory System, and specialized units such as the Marine Detail, Snowmobile Patrol, and Underwater Recovery is also included.

This accretion also contains copies of three other State Police sites. The AMBER Alert site (copied March 16, 2020) contains updated information about the multistate system for issuing public alerts regarding children who have been abducted and are considered at risk of harm and the manner in which the public should respond when such alerts are issued.

Owing to the structure of the live site and the limitations of Web archiving technology, only the homepage, Events page, and News page of the the TRACS (Traffic and Criminal Software) site (copied April 8, 2020) could be captured properly.

The Join the State Police site (copied March 16, 2020) contains information about how to apply to become a State Police officer; the age, academic, citizenship, hearing and vision, and physical fitness qualifications candidates must meet; and the State Police tattoo policy. It also contains information about the State Police Academy curriculum and grooming requirements, benefits for applicants who served in the armed forces, and regional recruitment officers.
