The first College Conference on Teaching New York History was held in Cooperstown, New York in 1957 under the direction of the New York State Education Department's Division of Archives and History. The name of the conference changed to the Conference on New York State History in 1980. Stefan Bielinski, New York State Museum Senior Historian, along with two others representing non-state entities, was responsible for planning and implementing the conference. After 2001, other sponsors, including the Archives Partnership Trust and the New York State Historical Association (NYSHA), assumed leadership over and management of the conference.

The Conference on New York State History is "an annual meeting of academic and public historians, librarians and archivists, educators, publishers, and other interested individuals who come together to discuss topics and issues related to the people of New York State in historical perspective and to share information and ideas regarding historical research, programming, and the networking of resources and services."
