Biographical Sketch
Because most pre-1911 election canvass records were destroyed or damaged in the State Capitol fire, pre-1911 data has been reconstructed from a variety of sources, including newspapers, published compendia (such as the Legislative Manual), county boards of elections, and the State Archives. Post-1911 data comes from those same sources, as well as the State Board of Elections (1974-current).
Scope and Content Note
This compilation of data documents vote totals by party for the following elections: (1) Statewide elections for state offices (i.e. Governor, Attorney General, Comptroller), and formerly elective offices (e.g. Lieutenant Governor, Secretary of State, State Engineer & Surveyor, etc.; judges of Court of Appeals are not included); (2) Presidential electors (starting 1828) by county and (starting 1860) larger city; (3) Governor by county (starting 1777) and (starting 1858) larger city; (4) U.S. Senator (starting 1914; Senators earlier were elected by the State Legislature) by county and larger city; (5) U.S. Representatives in Congress (starting 1789) by district; (6) N.Y. Senator (starting 1788) by district; and (7) N.Y. Assembly member (starting 1789) by district.
