Administrative History

Maps in this series were created by the Harbor Commissioners for the preservation of the New York City Harbor from encroachments in pursuance of the act of March 30, 1855, chapter 121. The commissioners consisted of George W. Patterson, James Bowen, John L. Talcott, Bradford R. Wood, John Vanderbilt, and Thomas Clowes. The maps were surveyed by the United States Coast Survey, led by Professor A.D. (Alexander Dallas) Bache, superintendent in 1856. The Harbor Commissioners, along with the United States Coast Survey, created two volumes of the Atlas of the New-York Harbor as well as topographic and hydro-graphic sheets for New York Bay and Harbor. The records were filed with the secretary of state in 1857 and 1860.
