Summary:

This series contains select video recordings of the Governor's Arts Awards from 1985-2002. These edited videos were produced by commercial, private, and affiliate cable channels and were possibly broadcast on PBS and cable stations statewide. This series also includes PSA's produced by the New York State Council on the Arts, most likely part of an "I Love New York - Celebrates the Arts" campaign, and one VHS tape of Chelsea Dock, a child prodigy pianist, performing at the Governor's Arts Awards in 2002.

Administrative History

The Governor's Arts Awards aimed to recognize and celebrate exceptional individuals and organizations in the arts community. The ceremonies were first initiated under Governor Nelson Rockefeller in 1966 and were held until 1976 when the state's financial crisis forced them to be discontinued. They were re-initiated in 1984 under Governor Mario Cuomo and held annually until 2002.

At each awards ceremony, honorary awards were presented in various arts fields correlating with the New York State Council on the Arts grants program areas. Nominations were made by the public and constituents, selected by Council on the Arts staff, and confirmed by the governor.

This series contains select video recordings of the Governor's Arts Awards. This series also includes public service announcements produced by the New York State Council on the Arts, most likely as part of an "I Love New York - Celebrates the Arts" campaign; and one VHS tape of Chelsea Dock, a child prodigy pianist, performing at the Governor's Arts Awards in 2002.

Media found in the series include U-matic, Betacam, Betacam-SP, VHS videotapes, as well as one 1" reel-to-reel videotape.
