Scope and Content Note

The series consists of published volumes of annual reports made consecutively by the trustees of the New York State Asylum for Idiots, from which Newark was first created as an experimental branch; the board of managers of the New York State Custodial Asylum for Feeble-Minded Women; the board of managers of the Newark State School for Mental Defectives; the board of managers of the Newark State School; and, finally, the board of managers of the Newark Developmental Center.

Reports summarize the management and progress of the institution. Reports were initially transmitted to the state legislature, but began being transmitted to the Department of Mental Hygiene upon its establishment in 1926. The most recent reports were submitted to the Office of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities.

Information varies over time and typically includes lists of board of visitor members and resident officers; superintendent's reports of statistics of admissions and discharges and general health of patients and employees; care, treatment, and training of patients; social services; physical facilities report; business officer's financial report; a detailed statistical summary; and a detailed report of the numbers of staff in each position.
