Administrative History

The records in this series were created and maintained by the Long Island State Park Commission (LISPC), Jones Beach State Parkway Authority (JBSPA), and Bethpage Park Authority (BPA) during the early to mid-twentieth century. Since the LISPC, JBSPA, and BPA shared headquarters and their functions were intricately intertwined, records created by these entities were retained collectively. The bulk of the records date from the decades when the commission and authorities were under the direction of Robert Moses.

Scope and Content Note

Topics of note include a 1938 Fire Island Restoration and Protection report, reports regarding slum clearance projects, and progress reports for the New York World's Fair. Also included are construction and improvement project descriptions, proposals, and updates relating to the Shore Parkway Extension and Marine Parkway; Long Island Railroad; Coney Island improvements; and parks and playground improvements for communities.
