Administrative History
Chapter 12 of the Laws of 1788 gave the Court of Chancery the responsibility for overseeing the well-being and property of persons deemed idiots or lunatics and infant trustees (persons under the age of 21 whose person and estate are under the care of a trustee or guardian). This responsibility was extended to habitual drunkards by Chapter 109 of the Laws of 1821. Power to appoint a guardian for an infant was conferred by Chapter 106 of the Laws of 1815.
Scope and Content Note
This series is a listing of information on cases in which a guardian, committee, or receiver was appointed by the Vice Chancellor in the Third Circuit. The information in this series is organized in columns. Each entry contains: the name(s) and place and county of residence of the infant, lunatic, or drunkard; the name(s) and place and county of residence of the appointed guardian, committee, or receiver; the date and amount of their bond; the name and place and county of residence of their surety; date of filing of the dependent's property inventory and annual reports of accountings; and notes regarding the case.
