Administrative History

The Court of Chancery was abolished effective July 1, 1847. Cases pending in the 1st Circuit were transferred to the Supreme Court in Equity in New York County for final determination.

Scope and Content Note

This volume partially indexes transcriptions of enrolled decrees of the Court of Chancery and Court of Chancery (1st Circuit) filed in New York City. Also indexed are a small number of judgments of the Supreme Court in Equity (New York County) after July 1, 1847, when the Court of Chancery was abolished.

Each entry in the index states the last names of the complainant and defendant; year of filing decree; court in which action was taken (Chancellor, Vice-Chancellor, Supreme Court); type of document (decree or judgment, often blank); liber and page number of transcribed decree or judgment; year when transcribed ("recorded"); whether compared with original documents and certified ("yes" or blank); and "remarks" (usually cross references). The liber and page numbers refer to transcriptions of enrolled decrees in series JN306. The index contains entries for volumes (libers) 1-277 only, of the total of 441.
