Administrative History

Father Isaac Jogues was a Jesuit missionary to the Iroquois, and in 1646 was the first white man to see Lake George. He was killed by the Mohawk Indians later the same year, and was canonized by the Roman Catholic Church in 1930. The Laws of 1936, Chapter 870, set up a Temporary State Commission to select an appropriate site on Lake George for erecting a monument in honor of Father Jogues.

This scrapbook was compiled by Joseph J. Early, and presented by him to the Governor and Legislature on the occasion of the dedication of the Father Isaac Jogues Memorial in 1939. The scrapbook contains clippings, photographs, brochures, and other items relating to the career of Father Jogues and the dedication of the memorial to him at Fort George State Park. (The park is now called the Lake George Battlefield Park.)
