Ordinance for the better prevention of fires in New Amsterdam

The honorable lord director general and lords councilors of N. Netherland order and command the fire wardens, for the purpose of preventing any calamities from fire, to inspect every house and see whether everyone is keeping his chimney properly cleaned by sweeping; and if found in default thereof to pay a fine of three guilders immediately, to be applied according to the proclamation published on 21 January 1648.

Thus done and ordered in session in Fort Amsterdam in N. Netherland, the 28th of September 1648.[1]
