Ordinance amending the preceding ordinance on the excise of wines and strong liquors
Series:
Scanned Document:
Whereas invoices indicate that wines are more expensive in the fatherland than formerly, and as a result the tavern keepers purchase them here at a higher price; and in addition, because of the preceding [ ordinance ], they are taxed somewhat higher, as may be seen by the tenor thereof.
Therefore, the tavern keepers are hereby permitted to sell French wine at twenty-four stivers, brandy and Spanish wine at fifty stivers, or by the mutsje at seven stivers, without being allowed to exceed the aforesaid prices. On pain of forfeiting their business and ten pounds Flemish in addition.
18 August 1653.[1]
Notes
Also in LO, 148. This ordinance was disapproved by the directors at Amsterdam in their letter dated June 5, 1654. They pronounced the ordinance impractical and foresaw the impossibility of executing such a law. The directors also admonished Stuyvesant to adhere to the customs and ordinances of Amsterdam in the future. See NYCD, 12:1 and LO, 148n.
