We, the undersigned, attest and declare by Christian words and in good conscience, in place and with promise of an oath, if required, that it is true and truthful that we demanded of the Swedish lieutenant his commission and order, which he showed us from his governor. In it, it was expressly stated that he should not allow a single post or stake to be set in the ground, and if we were to do this to stop us with friendly words or by force; and he also ordered that two men be constantly kept in the channel in order to see where we intended to build; and not to allow any timber to be landed. Done 4 November 1648 in

Fort Beversreede.
