Administrative History

Chapter 910 of the Laws of 1936 created the State Traffic Commission. The Commissioner of Motor Vehicles, the Superintendent of State Police and the Commissioner of Highways were the designated officials of the Commission. The administrative head was the Commissioner of Motor Vehicles. Chapter 717 of the Laws of 1967 abolished the Traffic Commission, and its duties and functions were transferred to the Department of Transportation.

Scope and Content Note

This series consists of typed and mimeographed minutes of meetings and annual reports of the State Traffic Commission. The minutes deal with the regulation of the type, location, placement, maintenance and removal of all traffic control lights on state highways outside of cities; adoption of uniform rules ensuring the conformity of the signs with nationally accepted standards; regulation of vehicles' speed on state highways outside of cities; direction of placement and maintenance of directional signs within cities to facilitate through traffic (provided consent from local authorities was obtained); formulation of highway safety programs; surveyance of traffic conditions on state highways; recommendation of legislation; and assistance to city and village officials with their traffic problems. The annual reports deal with the same matters described above. They also provide statistical data on speed restrictions approved, traffic signs erected, etc.
