Scope and Content Note

These files are correspondence, with occasional memoranda, notes, transcripts of historical documents, and papers on historical topics.

Correspondence primarily concerns questions received by the State Historian on a variety of topics relating to New York history. Some sample subject headings are: Bibliographies; Colonial Citizens of New York; Education, Schools, Academies, Laws, etc.; Histories - counties; Land Patents and Grants, Indian Treaties, Deeds; Military Records - Civil War; Revolution, Battles, Campaigns, etc.; and War of 1812 - Military Records.

Letters by the State Historian provide information drawn from printed and primary sources about former residents of the state, historical events, and the development of state government. Some letters are quite detailed. Also included are occasional copies of papers or transcripts of historical documents prepared by correspondents of the State Historian, and memoranda by department staff on topics of general interest, such as the origin of convocations of the Board of Regents or Civil War records.

13917-00: This accretion consists of correspondence and reports pertaining to approximately twenty projects undertaken by the Division of Archives and History between 1955 and 1970. The files deal with projects relating to Colonial and Revolutionary history, the compilation of the 1865 census, and the history of the New York State Capitol.
