Arrangement

Series has been arranged into three sub-series: Division of Law Enforcement Security files, Security Manuals, and Slides and Photographs.

Scope and Content Note

Series consists of records related to security operations of the 1980 Winter Olympics, which were held at Lake Placid, New York. The Division of Law Enforcement of the Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) worked in conjunction with the New York State Police to provide security. The records include reports, manuals, maps of the area, security plans, budget files, emergency disaster plans, search and rescue procedures, communications plans, personnel assignments and slides used in security briefings. The majority of the records were used and/or accumulated by Division of Law Enforcement Assistant Director George G. Firth.

This collection's description was enhanced as a part of the New York State Archives Environmental History Virtual Research Collection Project, 2004. File titles have been transcribed directly from original folders. The National Endowment for the Humanities provided funding for this project.

The Division of Law Enforcement Security files sub-series consists of records related to officer post assignments and schedules; security training documents; venue/post reports; personnel records; shift critiques; financial and budget related records; equipment records; records related to cooperative arrangement with New York State Police; newspaper clippings; and published items related to the 1980 Winter Olympics.

The Security Manuals sub-series consists of manuals used for training of DEC officers in preparation for their role in the 1980 Winter Olympics and for coordinating security operations at Olympic venues. Subseries 3: Briefing slides and DEC photographs

135 35mm color slides; 23 black and white photographs

Scope and Content Note:

The briefing slides and DEC photographs sub-series consists of approximately 135 color slides of venue sites, DEC officers, aerial views of Olympic site, buildings around Olympic site, interior checkpoints, and Lake Placid streets. Sub-series also contains 23 black and white photographs of injured DEC officers and a pick-up truck with numerous bullet holes in it. These photographs (created ca. 1974) appear to be unrelated to Olympic security events. Duplicates are available for all slides, except slide no. 135.
