Summary:
This series documents the computation of state reimbursement to reservation and non-reservation school districts for the education and transportation costs of Indian children (K-12). It consists of contracts with school districts, tuition claims and documentation, budget vouchers, tuition calculations, fiscal reports, and related correspondence and memoranda.

Administrative History

In January of 1974, the Native American Education Unit was created to consolidate programs and functions involving the education of Native Americans in New York State from numerous NYSED divisions and offices. Among other activities, the unit provides guidance to local school districts receiving federal Title IV and Johnson-O'Malley Act funds, allocates state aid programs to local school districts educating Native Americans residing on reservations, and administers the New York State Indian Aid program which provides financial aid for Native American students attending postsecondary schools.

Scope and Content Note

This subseries contains files documenting the Native American Education Unit's provision of reimbursements to New York State school districts for expenses related to the education of students from Indian reservations in district schools. These documents include state aid voucher forms, listing the number of Indian students in the school district at each school level (kindergarten, elementary, secondary, and handicapped), along with the tuition rates for each type of student. Also included are lists of students eligible to be counted for reimbursement, correspondence showing recalculations of tuition rates and amounts districts were underpaid or overpaid in their reimbursements, worksheets for determining per-student tuition rates, and copies of contracts between NYSED and school districts for the education of Native American students.

Scope and Content Note:

This subseries consists of documents related to the reimbursement by NYSED to school districts for the transportation of Native American students from reservations to district schools. Included are copies of contracts made by school districts to bus transportation companies, state aid vouchers, exemptions from competitive bidding, and charts detailing transporation expenses for each district. Also included are letters from NYSED to school districts detailing policy changes affecting transportation contracts.
