Scope and Content Note

17387-93: Tape characteristics: The information is contained in 14 rectangular files with hierarchical sort sequences. Magnetic tape: 9-Track. Tape Density: 6,250 BPI. Tape recording mode: EBCDIC. Tape labels: IBM next hit standard. Use is recommended on a mainframe computer with tape drives capable of reading data in the above format and a general statistics package (e.g. SPSS, SAS), or a higher level language (e.g. "C").

17387-95: This accretion consists of the 1980 United States Census of Population and Housing counts for New York State. It includes three types of 1980 Census data products: Summary Tape Files (STF) 1-5, Public Use Microdata Samples (PUMS), and special tabulations. All of the data products are accompanied by technical documentation produced by the U.S. Bureau of the Census. In addition, the New York State Archives has produced a supplementary guide to the Census documentation.

STF records contain population and housing tabulations for geographic areas such as blocks, tracts, counties and states. Each STF is sorted according to a geographic hierarchy defined by the U.S. Bureau of the Census. STFs 1 and 2 contain tabulations based on complete count data. STFs 3, 4, and 5 contain tabulations compiled from sample data.

PUMS files contain records representing a 5% and 1% sample of the entire population. Unlike Summary Tape Files, the unit of analysis for PUMS records is the individual person or housing unit. These records are sorted by geographic area. PUMS files contain the complete range of population and housing information collected in the 1980 Census.

Special tabulations are compiled by the U.S. Census Bureau to meet specific needs for specialized data. The New York State Archives maintains the following special tabulations: Public Law 94-171, County to County Migration Flows, Workers by County of Residence by County of Work, American Indian Supplementary File, Equal Employment Opportunity Special File, Person and Housing Unit Counts for Tracts and Minor Civil Divisions.

17387-95: Tape Characteristics: The 1980 Census counts for the York State consist of 26 files. The files are stored on 48 9-track open reel tapes or 22 l/2-inch cartridge tapes in previous hit IBM next hit standard label EDCDIC. The 9-track tapes are recorded at 6250 bpi and the cartridge tapes are recorded at 38,000 bpi.

17387-99: This accretion consists of the 1990 United States Census of Population and Housing counts for New York State. Census data products include Standard Tape Files (STF) 1B, 2B, 4A, 4B, and S-5; and Public Use Microdata Sample (PUMS) 3%. Technical documentation for all data products from the U.S. Bureau of the Census is also included. No special tabulations are included in this accretion.

17387-99: Tape Characteristics: The information is contained in 82 files. The files are stored on 68 magnetic tape reels and 10 catridges in previous hit IBM standard label EDCDIC.
