Scope and Content Note
This series consists of the Comptroller's correspondence with county treasurers regarding bounties paid for destruction of illegal fish nets, with certificates to county treasurer signed by town supervisor describing seized nets, giving type, size, and value, with receipt for bounty payment.
Also included is a typewritten list of certificates, giving number, person issued to, amount, dates issued and paid, witnesses' names, recipients' names; there is a name index to this list. (Only a few of the certificates on this list are present in the original.) A law of 1898 authorized a bounty to be paid to any person who found an illegal net and presented the same to a town officer; the town was reimbursed for the disbursement by the Comptroller. Most of the bounties appear to have been paid in the Finger Lakes area for illegal fish nets.
