Scope and Content Note
These are lists of charges for freight carried by boats of the Baxter Steam Canal Boat Transportation Company.
One list gives information on trips up the canal (westward), and one on trips down the canal (eastward). The lists give: destination; weight in pounds; and freight cost in dollars and cents. The information is also listed by boat, indicating: number of trips made by each boat; boat's name; weight; and freight. Legislation of 1846 required the determination of tonnage of all cargo carried on canal boats so that tolls could be charged by the ton.
