Scope and Content Note

This account book contains records of cash payments for the construction or repair of the Black River, Genesee Valley, Crooked Lake, Chemung, and other branch canals, as well as the Oneida River Improvement. Payments are entered chronologically under accounts for individuals or firms supplying materials or services.

Each entry gives the date, voucher number, amount paid, and occasionally a brief note on the type of work done. "Miscellaneous payments" list individuals who received payments for labor, damages or repairs to their property, etc. The accounts were presumably kept by the Canal Commissioners, but there is no documentation supporting this claim.
