Administrative History
Taxes were levied pursuant to Chapter 17 of the Laws of 1778 " in order to defray the expence (sic) of the present warrant to discharge the debts of this state and to make due provisions for the support of the civil government." Following this initial legislation, each year this tax was to be collected, a similar law was passed.
Scope and Content Note
This series consists of returns for the amount of taxes paid into the Albany and Dutchess Counties treasuries. The series consists of lists of dated returns denoting the amount of money that was collected in each district of the County. The Dutchess County returns, in addition to this information, provide the names of the collectors for each district and in some instances, how the tax money was disbursed
