Administrative History
The authority to issue certificates entitling teachers to teach in any common school was conferred on the Superintendent of Public Instruction upon creation of that office in 1854. In 1875, examination was made a requirement for certification by the Superintendent.
Scope and Content Note
This series consists of affidavits submitted by teachers in application for replacement of state teaching certificates that were lost or destroyed. Most affidavits are on standardized forms providing information on when and where the teacher's work was completed under the uniform system of examination, when and where the teaching certificate was issued, the grade of the certificate, and when and how the original certificate was lost or destroyed.
