Scope and Content Note

This series consists of abstracts and indexes to Series A0453, Record of Deeds. Each volume abstracts several deed books and contains grantor, grantee, and location indexes to all the entries therein. Each abstract gives the name of grantor and grantee, date of conveyance or transfer, and a summary description of the property or right which is the subject of the deed. Some instruments (primarily commercial contracts) recorded in the deed books are not abstracted here.

The abstracts are numbered consecutively in each volume, starting with "1." At the front of each volume are alphabetical grantor and grantee indexes, with references to volume and page numbers in the present series and in Series A0453 Deeds. Each index entry provides the location of the lands conveyed or the nature of the right transferred. At the back of each volume is a location and subject index, with volume and page references.

The categories employed in the location and subject indexes are inconsistent, and the researcher should consult the various indexes discussed in Series A0453 Deeds. The abstracts and indexes of deeds were compiled in the Secretary of State's office by a clerk paid from appropriations made by Laws of 1859, Chap. 508, and Laws of 1860, Chap. 464.
