Scope and Content Note
These are indexes created by the State Engineer's office to gain control of the maps and volumes of land records held by the office. The series indexes Books of Sales of State Lands, Land Survey Field Books, Records of Surveys and Maps of State Lands ("Land Papers, 2nd series"), and Survey Maps of New York State Lands ("Rolled Maps").
The indexes generally provide: name of town, tract, lot(s), or owner; volume and page number (if a land survey or purchase record); map number (if a map); and map case or portfolio letter or number (if a map).
Volume 5, entitled "Record," lists maps and surveys in numerical order and duplicates information published in David E.E. Mix, Catalogue of Maps and Surveys in the Office of the Secretary of State, State Engineer and Surveyor, and Comptroller, and the New York State Library (Albany, 1859).
