Scope and Content Note

This series consists of a bound volume containing the names and needs of soldiers who visited the Washington, D.C. office of the New York Military Agency between December, 1863 and May, 1865.

Information contained in this volume includes soldier's name, rank, residence (majority are from New York but some are from other states), regiment, company, location, date of visit, reason for visit, and remarks. The nature of the visits vary: they often deal with applications for passes or pensions and bounties; inquiries about employment; shipment of personal items back home; transportation to regiment or back home; or requests for medical examinations in order to obtain discharges. Often the remarks refer to the disposition of the soldier's request.
