Summary:
The State Auditing Board was authorized to audit claims against the state for expenses incurred in the support of volunteers during the Civil War. This volume contains the results of every claim presented to the Auditing Board. Data includes claim number; classification (designated by capitalized or lower case letter); name of claimant; address (usually city or town); by whom claim was presented; date claim was filed; description of claim; amount claimed; description of board's actions; and final disposition.

Administrative History

The Auditing Board was created by Chapter 397 of the Laws of 1862 and was authorized to audit claims against the state for expenses incurred in the organization, equipment, and subsistence of volunteers during the Civil War. During its existence the board audited 1,352 claims of which 728 were allowed and 624 disallowed. A total of $294,948.32 worth of claims was admitted while the board rejected another $294,800.33.

Scope and Content Note

This volume contains the results of every claim presented to the Auditing Board. The record for each claim contains the following information: claim number; classification (designated by capitalized or lower case letter); name of claimant; address (usually city or town); by whom claim was presented; date claim was filed; description of claim; amount claimed; description of board's actions; and final disposition. A description of the various criteria used to classify each claim, including those both allowed and disallowed, can be found in the Auditing Board's final report to the Legislature (Assembly Document No. 157, 1863).
