Scope and Content Note
This volume contains two sections of ledger accounts for appropriations received from the state.
The first section, covering the period June 1844 to September 1854, is called "Cash Account" and has entries for state appropriations and prison sales on the debit side and on the other side entries to the credit of the prison, with monthly totals and running balances. The second section contains separate accounts for each appropriation by the Legislature for the prison, for such purposes as enlargement of the prison, a plank road from the prison to Saranac road, building a new shoe shop, heating apparatus, exploration for iron on state lands, books for the prison library, and others. The accounts for the special appropriations contain detailed entries for labor and supplies and give name of contractor, date of payment, and amount paid. There are also separate accounts for each general appropriation for the prison.
