Administrative History
The position of Administrative Assistant was added to the Commissioner's staff in 1966.
Scope and Content Note
Series consists of correspondence, memorandums, reports, press releases, meeting agenda, pamphlets, and clippings generated or received by Administrative Assistant R. Pratt Krull. The general alphabetical subject files contain information on a variety of subjects including racial imbalance in schools; the Ocean Hill-Brownsville Demonstration School District in New York City; pending appeals to the Commissioner, particularly relating to student attire; and education-related legislation before the legislature.
The miscellaneous files relate primarily to the Ocean Hill-Brownsville Demonstration School District established in 1966 to test decentralization of New York City's public schools. These files contain information on race relations in the schools of the district and on the results of a 1968 teachers strike. Among the records are reports of observers sent by the Education Department to monitor conditions in the schools, as well as daily logs of events in the district.
