Administrative History

The establishment of county vocational education and extension boards by the vote of county boards of supervisors was authorized in 1926 (Chapter 505). The law requires that the Commissioner of Education approve courses offered by the boards. This review and approval was completed by the Assistant Commissioner for Vocational Education until 1956, when these duties were assigned to the Bureau of Rural Administrative Services by the Associate Commissioner for Elementary, Secondary and Adult Education.

Scope and Content Note

Series consists of correspondence, memorandums, reports, charts, applications and occasional clippings related to the programs and services offered by county vocational education and extension boards (VEEB). These records provide information on the development of Department policy toward VEEBs, the approval of programs and services for individual boards, and Department review of pending legislation affecting VEEBs.

Files for each county board are divided into a correspondence file and a plans and reports file. The latter contains applications for approval of services planned which give all or some of the following information: name of staff member; service; schools served; salary; service period; staff members' certification; and number of students served. Reports from boards of services provided include similar information, often supplemented by narrative descriptions of services.
