Scope and Content Note

These volumes contain annual reports of the trustees of museums; other institutions or associations of science, literature, art, history, or "other departments of knowledge"; associations of teachers, students, graduates of educational institutions; and other associations with educational or cultural purposes chartered by the Board of Regents pursuant to legislation of 1910. Each report for the period 1914-1951 gives information concerning: name and address of institution or association; values of sites, buildings, equipment, library, investments and amount of debts; library (number of volumes); students (number of male and female students by year or grade, aggregate and average daily attendance); teachers (name, degree, college, number of hours and subjects taught); receipts and expenditures; publications; institution's or association's objects and accomplishments; and board of trustees (members' names, addresses, and term expiration dates--beginning 1921). Occasionally, letters of transmittal or excerpts from institutions' internal annual reports are bound in with these reports.

Beginning in 1952 two report forms came into use, one for museums and historical societies and associations, and the other for "special institutions" or all other organizations. The museum and historical society reports (filed in 1952 and 1955 only) give information concerning: type of institution; values of sites, buildings, and investments; library (number of volumes, pamphlets, and serials); records collections (number of printed items, photographs, newspapers, manuscripts, audio records, maps, and filmed records); museum collections (historical, fine arts, and natural history); exhibits (number of rooms, exhibit cases, and exhibits relating to history, fine arts, and natural history); historic houses owned or operated by the organization; staff (name and address of director, number of other staff); visitors (public hours, number of visitors, school classes, and research visitors); receipts and expenditures; publications; membership; and governing board (number of members; name, address, and term expiration dates of president and secretary).

The reports from "special institutions" (filed 1953-1955 only) give information concerning: name and address of institution; value of sites, buildings, and investments; pupils and teachers (number and degree types held); library (number of volumes); purpose (brief narrative statement); receipts and expenditures; and membership and directors (number of each, names and addresses of president, secretary, and treasurer). The reports in this volume were bound in the following order: 1955 A-Z, 1954 A-C, 1953 Z-A, and 1954 Z-C.
