Arrangement

Chronological by year, thereunder by type of report, then usually by type of school (private or public), then alphabetical by name of school.

Scope and Content Note

Series consists of a variety of forms used to collect data for the Higher Education Data System (HEDS). By informal agreement the Department also serves as data collector for the Federal Higher Education General Information Survey. Copies of many of the Federal survey forms are retained for inclusion in HEDS.

The following reports and information are present for each public and private institution of higher education in the State: Degrees Conferred--number of degrees by major field, degree level, and sex of recipient; Opening Fall Enrollment--number of students by academic level, sex, and full or part time status; Comprehensive Report on Enrollment--enrollment by students' year, major subject, sex, resident status, full or part time status, number living on campus, number of first time freshmen; Students Enrolled for Advanced Degrees--number of students by degree subject, full or part time status, and completion of time towards degree; Faculty Forms--members of staff by subject field, full or part time status, senior or junior status, and institutional or research duties; Degree Status of Faculty and Staff--numbers of full time faculty by degrees attained, academic rank, and sex; Financial Statistics of Institutions of Higher Learning--amounts of revenues, expenditures, and physical plant fixed assets values; Library Collection, Staff, Expenditures and Salaries--library holdings summary, operating expenses, numbers of staff by position type and full or part time status, and salaries by title; Projections in Higher Education--projections for selected years of enrollment, degrees to be granted, staffing, revenue and expenditures, additions to physical plant, student charges, and a statement regarding long range planning at the institution;

Selected Adult Education Activities in Institutions of Higher Education--estimated adult education activities by type, titles and basic statistics for programs with more than 200 registrants, community development and community service programs, consultation services offered in conjunction with community development or service programs, and professional refresher courses; New York State Study of Residence and Migration of Full-Time, Degree-Credit College Students--numbers of students from each state or territory by academic level; Employees in Institutions of Higher Education--expenditures for salaries and fringe benefits for academic and administrative positions; and Inventory of College and University Physical Facilities--square foot areas used for listed purposes.

HEDS serves as a body of statistical information on the state's institutions of higher education. Beginning in the mid-1970s this information is automated. Data forms for 1967 were turned over to the Division of Higher Education; post-1969 data forms are retained by the Bureau of Statistical Services.
