Scope and Content Note

This volume is a report of J. B. Stittson, Division Engineer of the Western Division of the Canal system. The report consists of: a tabular statement of engineering expenses on each subdivision of the Western Division for the year 1850, giving name of worker, nature of work (e.g. inspector, office clerk), time employed in days, rate of compensation, travel amount (if applicable), and total amount; a statement showing length and estimated cost of work under contract and amount of work done, and remaining work to be done at contract prices, on the Western Division up to December 31, 1850, giving nature of work, number of miles or number of structures, estimated cost at contract prices, amount due at contract prices, and remaining amount to be done at contract prices; a statement showing length, mechanical structures, and estimated cost of work required to complete each section of the Erie Canal enlargement and Genesee Valley Canal not under contract on the Western Division, giving quantities, items/description of work, estimated cost prices, amounts, and totals (concerns Sections 207 through 262 and Sections 266 through 315; summaries by section number are also provided); and remarks of the Division Engineer regarding prices, quantities, construction, engineering issues, and progress of work. A listing of contents to the report with page numbers for each section is provided at the back of the volume.
