Summary:
This series consists of New York County criminal court trial transcripts which were created for use in appeals. Most of the trials occurred in the Court of General Sessions of the Peace. Others took place in the Court of Oyer and Terminer; in the trial term of the Supreme Court; or in lower tribunals such as the Police Court and the Magistrates' Court.

Scope and Content Note

This series consists of a microfilm copy of trial transcripts from New York County criminal courts, which were made for appeals. Most of the trials occurred in the Court of General Sessions of the Peace; some took place in the Court of Oyer and Terminer (prior to 1896), in the trial term of the Supreme Court (after 1895), or in lower tribunals such as the Police Court and the Magistrates' Court. Microfilm reels comprising accretion B0815-09 may fill gaps in the original accession.

"Trial Transcripts of the County of New York (1883-1927): A Historical Introduction" provides historical background on the criminal courts of New York County and a guide to use of the microfilm and the accompanying index. The "main index" lists each transcript by the present number, old number, date, and microfilm roll number. Each entry in the index gives the name and sex of the defendant, the charge(s), and the names of the judge, prosecuting attorney, and defending attorney(s). The "supplementary index" contains indexes to present case numbers by defendants (index 'A'), judges and attorneys (index 'B') and charge(s) (index 'C').

B0815-09: The master negative reels were received from the Lloyd Sealy Library of the John Jay College of Criminal Justice on May 26, 1992.

Access Restrictions

The New York State Archives holds only master negative microfilm of this series. No public use copies of the microfilm are available. Researchers are referred to the Sealy Library, John Jay College of Criminal Justice, which holds use copies.
