Scope and Content Note

This series consists of four large bound volumes of expenditure abstracts apparently created for the Office of the State Comptroller under Chapter 147, Laws of 1903, the Barge Canal Law. These volumes document expenditures for the construction of the Erie, Champlain, and Oswego Canals and were prepared and signed by the division engineer working with the state engineer and surveyor.

Accounts are in columnar format. Headings include name of division engineer, geographical division, name of canal, voucher number, date, to whom paid, contract number, amount of voucher, position of payee, services or equipment paid for, subtotals, and totals. Information supplied under the headings is almost exclusively typewritten. Verso shows certification by division engineer and state engineer and surveyor.
