Scope and Content Note

This volume contains typewritten abstracts of colonial commissions, licenses, pardons, reprieves, and other documents. It is a copy of a manuscript list or abstract compiled by Edmund B. O'Callaghan sometime in the mid-1800s. O'Callaghan made the original abstract from the Secretary of State's books of commissions that were destroyed in the capitol fire of 1911. It is possible that the typescript was produced by the New York State Library, which bound the volume, but neither the transcriber nor the date the typescript was prepared is known. Volume also contains abstracts of commissions and other documents dated 1789.

Related Material

A1854 Record of Commissions, Dedimus Potestatem, Supersedeas, Pardons, and Other Executive Actions, contains surviving volumes of the books of commissions.

Related Publications

Another slightly different version of the original abstracts was published as O'Callaghan, Edmund B., comp. Calendar of New York Colonial Commissions, 1680-1770 (New-York Historical Society, 1929).
