Summary:
This series contains an assortment of unrelated records that were apparently removed from institutional records for purposes of research or exhibit. Volumes include: an admissions book (July 1925-June 1926); a parole/elopement book (May-December 1917); a book of escapes (April 1953-August 1957); a clothing account check book (mostly blank) with receipts for the New York Asylum for Idiots (ca. 1862); and a hospital admission/discharge book (1928). It also contains an assortment of apparently unrelated material collected for historical or documentary significance.

Scope and Content Note

This is an assortment of unrelated records that were apparently removed from the bulk of similar institutional records for purposes of research or exhibit. Integration with existing series is pending.

Volumes include: an admissions book (July 1925-June 1926); a parole/elopement book (May-December 1917); a book of escapes (April 1953-August 1957); a clothing account check book (mostly blank) with receipts for the New York Asylum for Idiots (ca. 1862); and a hospital admission/discharge book (1928).

Also present are loose documents pertaining to admissions, special fund estimates, clothing rules and requirements, and general information sheets about programs; manuals on statistics and writing; a scrapbook of clippings and ephemera on the Syracuse State School and Syracuse Developmental Center from the SDC library (1965-1980); and a "ICF/DD" information package for narrative presentations and staff briefings (including script of a slide/tape program) on the OMRDD program "Right at Home...Right in the Neighborhood" (June 1981).

B1698-06: This accretion consists of an assortment of apparently unrelated material collected for their historical or documentary significance. The records consist of 19th century proposals, contracts, and leases; Christmas bulletins; director's minutes and reports; board of visitors reports; draft institution histories; publications; blueprints; articles on issues related to mental retardation; histories of the Syracuse State School; conference proceedings; photographs; and management plans for closure of the facility for residential services.

Acquisition Information

B1698-06: These records were donated to the New York State Archives by a former administrator of the Syracuse Developmental Center from materials that were inadvertently left interfiled with her personal records at the time of her retirement.

Access Restrictions

Restricted in part in accordance with Mental Hygiene Law, Section 33.13, relating to confidentiality of clinical records. Access is permitted under certain conditions upon approval by the Office for People with Developmental Disabilities. Restricted records in accession B1698-00 are located in Box 2.
