Scope and Content Note

This series consists of archival copies of the publicly accessible website of the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance.

B2183-07: This accretion consists of a copy of the Department of Taxation and Finance site produced on January 25, 2007, shortly after Governor George E. Pataki (1995-2006) left office. It contains information about the department's history, mission, and organizational structure, annual reports (1996-2006), a strategic plan (2006), and press releases (2005-2007). Also present are tax forms and instructional booklets (1985-2006), a tax calendar highlighting deadlines for various forms and taxes (2006-2007), information about electronic filing of individual or business taxes, and information for tax professionals. It also contains publications and technical bulletins (2002-2006) regarding various taxes: alcoholic beverage, sales, cigarette, corporation, estate, income, withholding, highway use, and petroleum business.

Researchers should note that repeated 2007 attempts to capture a customer assistance website maintained by the department were unsuccessful.

B2183-08: This accretion consists of a copy of the Department of Taxation and Finance site produced on June 5, 2008, shortly after the resignation of Governor Eliot L. Spitzer (2007-2008). It contains background information about the department, a new strategic plan (2007), tax calendar (2008), and press releases (2008), and additional tax forms, instructional booklets (1985-2008), publications, and technical bulletins (2002-2007) regarding various taxes.

Researchers should note that repeated 2008 attempts to capture a customer assistance website maintained by the department were unsuccessful and that this site was removed from the live Web at some point after these attempts were made.

B2183-10: This accretion consists of a copy of the Department of Taxation and Finance site produced on December 20, 2010, shortly before Governor David A. Paterson (2008-2010) left office. It contains a new strategic plan (2010), press releases (2010), and additional tax forms and instructional booklets (1985-2010). It also contains additional publications and technical bulletins (2002-2010) relating to various taxes.

Researchers should note that repeated attempts to capture http://www7.nystax.gov, another public site that the department maintained as of late 2010, were unsuccessful and that this site was removed from the live Web at some point after these attempts were made.

B2183-20: This accretion consists of a copy of the Department of Taxation and Finance site produced on February 24, 2020. It contains background information about the department, newer press releases (2017-2020), and resources for individuals, businesses, real property owners, tax professionals, researchers, and government policymakers, including: filing instructions, tax forms and publications (1985-2019), advisory opinions, and technical memorandums. Also present are publications relating to various tax topics, including the Handbook of New York State and Local Taxes (2012), the New York State Sourcebook (undated), special reports concerning the tax preparation industry, brownfield tax credits, news media and the Internet, and other topics.

Researchers should note that navigating through this copy may retrieve pages that are part of the December 20, 2010 copy of the site. If this happens, click the Browser's Back button until the home page of this copy is displayed and then navigate directly to the desired content. Attempting to access older tax forms and publications via the Individuals, Businesses, and Property Owners sections of the site will almost always redirect to the December 20, 2010 copy; to avoid this problem, access this information via the Tax Professionals section of the February 24, 2020 copy. Researchers should also note that some of the statistical data highlighted in this copy was actually housed on another website and could not be captured properly.
