Early indexes in this series include name of patient, book and page number of case record, date of admission, ward number, discharge date (sometimes with notes), and names and address of relatives or friends. Later indexes additionally give patient consecutive number, transfer information, and date of death if patient died while hospitalized.

Administrative History

At various times, New York City's Insane Asylums included the asylums on Blackwell's, Hart, Randall's and Ward's Islands; and Central Islip. The Asylum for the Insane on Ward's Island, with branches on Ward's and Randall's Islands, were for men. The Lunatic Asylum of Blackwell's and Hard Islands were for women. On February 28, 1896, the New York City Asylum became Manhattan State Hospital. After 1896, it served the counties of New York and Richmond.

Scope and Content Note

Index information changes over time and dates for some volumes overlap. Early indexes include name of patient, book and page number of case record, date of admission, ward number, discharge date (sometimes with notes), and names and address of relatives or friends. Number of previous attacks, duration of attacks, and number previous admissions are sometimes given. Later indexes additionally give patient consecutive number, transfer information, and date of death if patient died while hospitalized.

Access Restrictions

Restricted in accordance with Mental Hygiene Law, Section 33.13, relating to confidentiality of clinical records. Access is permitted under certain conditions upon approval by the Office of Mental Health.
