Administrative History

Chapter 75 of the Laws of 1830 incorporated the New York Life Insurance and Trust Company and stipulated that the Court of Chancery could appoint this institution as a guardian for infants whose estates yielded an annual income exceeding $100. The court used the Trust Company as a depository for the monies of infants and for other purposes.

Scope and Content Note

This series consists of the accounts of infants under the care of a court appointed guardian (infant-trustee) with the New York Life Insurance and Trust Company. The rules of the court mandated that a record be kept of these accounts.

Each account is maintained in a ledger format. Under the name of each infant the account is divided into a debit and credit side. The credit side contains a chronological listing of deposits and interest accumulations, their date, the date deposits begin to earn interest (if not date of deposit) and the rate of interest for original deposits. The debit side contains the date money was withdrawn, for who and/or what purpose, and the amount. Occasionally a note referring to a volume and page number in a general ledger is also recorded.
