Administrative History

Edward Theodore Bartlett was born in Skaneateles, New York on June 14, 1841. Descended from prominent political figures on both sides of his family, including two signers of the Declaration of Independence, Bartlett graduated from Union College and was admitted to the bar in 1862. He practiced law in Onondaga County until 1868, at which time he relocated to New York City, becoming the senior partner in the law firm of Bartlett, Wilson and Hayden.

After decades in private practice and active involvement in both the city and state bar associations, Bartlett was persuaded to run for Justice of the New York State Supreme Court and was defeated by Justice George L. Ingraham in 1891. In 1893, he accepted the Republican Party's nomination to run for Associate Judge of the New York State Court of Appeals and defeated Isaac H. Maynard by a substantial margin.

Bartlett assumed his position on the Court of Appeals in January of 1894 and was reelected in November of 1907. He remained an active member of the court and prolific author of judicial opinions on countless issues until his untimely death on May 3, 1910. The press and Bartlett's colleagues on the bench honored his memory with the highest praise, both of his personal character and his ability and dedication as a jurist.
