Scope and Content Note

L0163-78: This accretion consists of press releases issued by the Secretary to the Governor listing bills approved or vetoed by Governor Thomas E. Dewey from 1947 to 1951. There are separate releases for bills approved and bills vetoed.

The press releases for bills approved list bills signed by the governor on a particular date. The lists include chapter number of the new law, Assembly or Senate bill number, bill print number, person introducing bill, and a short title of the bill.

The press releases for vetoed bills usually pertain to only one bill but also include the text of the governor's veto memorandum filed with the bill. This memorandum (usually several paragraphs) gives the reasons why the bill was disapproved. Reasons for disapproval vary with each bill but usually point to shortcomings in the bill, harmful affects on segments of the public, duplication of existing law, need for further study of issues, etc. In some cases, the press releases list several bills vetoed without including the governor's memorandum.

L0163-13: This accretion consists of press releases issued by the Secretary of the Governor listing bills approved or vetoed by Governor Herbert H. Lehman from 1933 to 1936. There are separate releases for bills approved and bills vetoed.
